Build good habits by starting really small
October 7, 2026 · 4 min read
At the start of a year we often set big goals: work out an hour a day, read 50 books, wake up at 5 am. A few weeks later, everything is back to how it was. The problem usually isn't willpower — it's that we start too big.
Why small habits work
A habit forms when an action is repeated often enough in the same context that it becomes automatic. The smaller the habit, the easier it is to repeat — and repetition, not intensity, is what matters.
“Read for 10 minutes” is far easier to keep than “read for an hour”. And once 10 minutes feels natural, you'll often want to read more.
5 principles to make habits stick
- Start so small you can't fail. Want to exercise? Begin with 5 minutes of stretching. Want to drink more water? Start with one glass right after waking up.
- Stack it on an existing habit. “After I brush my teeth at night, I'll write three things I'm grateful for.” The old habit becomes the cue for the new one.
- Make it visible. Put the book on your pillow, the water bottle on your desk.
- Celebrate each completion. Checking it off in a calendar or app creates a sense of progress — and a streak is a powerful motivator.
- Never miss twice. Missing a day is normal. What matters is coming back the next day.
Be flexible with yourself
Not every habit needs to be daily. Exercising three times a week or calling a loved one twice a week are flexible goals that often last longer. Treat yourself like a friend in training: encourage, don't scold.
